Here’s the rules…
List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they’re listening to.

Overlaps

June 24, 2008 at 9:32 am (Pandora's Edge, writing)

I may have found the start of the 4th Night Lights episode, or at least I spotted Thane receiving a pair of pink rubber gloves which he’ll need when he locates the book bound in human skin (really happened) … and how/if that connects with Mademoiselle Sophie’s oddness of late I’m not really sure.  I’m also not sure if Mal finally appears in this one or not.  Probably not until the Siren in the Alps thing.  I am sure Mal’s an artist, a graphic novel type artist and one of his main characters is based on Milady Web… but what if his version is called Roja?  What if Mal is in fact working on a Wolf Hollow series spun off from his main storylines?  Just a link to amuse myself mainly but cool.

IMPlications

June 19, 2008 at 12:21 pm (morningside) (, , , , )

Wonder why I stopped writing IMPs at 20 000 words?  Must have either hit a wall or one of those cats wandered by and lured me into following … ah, the kitty excuse!  Gayla likes that one.  Still, if I found the right vibe it wouldn’t take that much to get Implications (working title; need better) done.

I think the problem is a lack of connection with the Captain character.  His name may or may not be Morgan but as everyone refers to him as Captain or Capitano it doesn’t really matter.  We’re fine until he leaves the lair and takes his team on that “training exercise” … then silence.  And this is more than sneaky radio silence.  He’s even got the storm-riding Merle with him!  They’ve gone way off the radar.  Hopefully they’ll explode something while Lad is retrieving the necromantic skull from his auntie.

See?  Lots of fun stuff there, if I can find the dicipline + inspiration combo.  Maybe at the circus next week.

Cat’s Paw

June 16, 2008 at 4:00 pm (writing) (, , )

She woke up with a craving and the day went downhill from there. All through the breakfast ritual, something nagged at her yet refused to be identified. Instead it lurked in the pit of her stomach and sent out sneaky waves whenever she was concentrating and filled her full of want.

By lunchtime she was jittery enough to stomp all the way to the park, spread her arms wide and turn a circle beneath the sun. ‘Okay, tell me.’

meow

June 16, 2008 at 12:11 pm (Rogue Mapping, writing) (, , , )

I seem to be stuck in Year of the Cat… felines are turning up in every series and I’m not even a cat person.  Oh, I like the idea of them but my ideal cat is sleek and sinuous and cynical, the kind of cat Lord Goring would be.  Yet the felines I encounter (rarely) are overflowing oozing beasts.

Friday being the 13th do you think I could find a black cat in my imagination?  No.  He’s green and curly as alfalfa and is in fact from the land of Sal … so he’s a Salad cat, name of Crouton.  I looked up from my book – the second Dexter – and there he was hovering in the vicinity of my left eye.  He wouldn’t go away until I wrote him down.

Right.  Done.  But Crouton was such a communicative cat that he had a lot in common with the cats terrorising the village by asking questions all the time.  It was a Rogue Mapping partial featuring Lee Dervani and Holly H Kincaid; now it’s almost complete.  What I’ll do with it then remains to be seen.  Hopefully, the cats will fade away for a while, or at least long enough I can stop worrying I have an inner Crazy Cat Lady.

south of infinity

June 10, 2008 at 4:29 pm (Angel, Siren's Gate) ()

The 4th Angel escapade grew from a set of Space Mermaid images by the delightful InfinityRain, particularly the redheaded one with the tinsel green scales and militant expression.  Hmmm, how would such a creature encounter my Angel?  Maybe mermaids are guardians, a sort of Darkling counterpart, and they need to liase to prevent destruction … because of the black holes.  Right.  Naturally.  And there must be pearls.  Also a strawberry sundae reference as I was eating that flavour Lifesavers at the time.  Oh, and hula hoops!  That’s all Helen’s fault as she was the one hula hooping regularly.

This one got me thinking of a crazy future when some student is studying The Works Of Kate quite seriously and getting it all wrong.  There’s no special significance in that image and as for that symbol, ha!  So I though I might fill in the context because without my notebooks, jewelery collection and assorted oddities, the poor dear would be completely lost.

Right.  Strawberry sundae and hula hoops we know how they turned up.  The statue wearing high heels is a tribute to Blondie (pink high heels) and Creedence, with a little Dark-Hunter thrown in as she’s armed with a double bow and and arrow combo.  Easy, really.

The title is a nod to Rain, to the movie Toy Story and … and … another movie, can’t remember will come to me later.  Then it’s mirrors and masks suggesting indentity crisis and an impending significant birthday plus the mermaid Infinity invoking the maternal tone and Angel resisting.  That’s where I stopped as it was getting far too deep and I prefer to leave my subconscious alone.  We get along much better that way.

Okay, maybe those futuristic scholars will be able to interpret liberally but I promise it’s mostly non-intentional on my part.

On a brighter note, Rain and I had fun and she went on to create a special image just for this story:

Gorgeous, yes?  All cool strength and capability.

We think there might be pirates up there, too, but they haven’t shown up yet.

three

June 8, 2008 at 4:56 pm (writing) (, )

The ultimate magic number!

It’s a three-day weekend, the last official one until November and so far I have finished three stories.  The first was a random piece of silliness for a seventy-two hour challenge; the built in challenge to these things is having to write the story once you’ve created the opportunity.  Very happy to have got it out of the way early and to have had fun in the process … where did the position description specify a queen must be female, hmmm?

Yesterday’s story just appeared while I was working on another.  I blinked and there was Jules from the Morningside line realising an already awkward situation just got worse.  She had cake so of course I paid attention.

Today – and this is the exciting one – I finished Incongition to the point I can set it aside for a polish during the week and send it to MMP.  Hurray!  It’s only been a couple of years and attempts and I know I’d like the cover to have a Carter Brown “Girl in a Shroud” feel to it.  Bad news is it feels like there’s a sequel lurking around.  I plan to ignore that feeling and have a glass of bubbly to celebrate.

Tomorrow … well, there’s a few I’d like to finish.

long dark nights

June 6, 2008 at 3:58 pm (writing) (, )

First I heard “In These Shoes?” as part of a soundtrack, then it turned up in a book along with “Us Amazonians” … both very cool.  Boredom struck one afternoon and wouldn’t you know it, Kirsty’s Tropical Brainstorm cd was very, very hard to find in Melbourne.  Hello, Amazon!

Both those songs live up to expectations but it’s AutumnGirlSoup that’s the standout track for me.  Abosolutely gorgeous lyrics and mood.  It also reminds me of some bellmusker pieces

Other current favourite is “Rio” from Ali McGregor’s Lullabies for the Angkor Orphanage  dreamy, lazy and yes, just want to use the music for flight … because it’s something to do with the night…
