M3

January 25, 2009 at 8:19 pm (mischief) ()

Having watched The Mummy 3 for the second time I can safely say the most amusing bit is the substandard blades. I mean, come on! They break so easily they may as well have a ‘made in China’ label on them. And the special features repeat respect for Chinese culture is the film making mantra… yes, it’s a plot device and I have a slightly devious brain but doesn’t that seem weird?

I did think the new Evie was introduced well. I’m not convinced, naturally, and when I need a Mummy fix I’ll stop at two doses. Hmmm. If there’s a fourth, where will it go in location and relationships?

mocha, my darling

January 22, 2009 at 6:11 pm (mischief) (, )

Melbourne is a coffee town and one of my favourite sources of mocha is the legendary Brunetti’s … specifically the City Square cafe as they do the loyalty card … but they also have a damn fine mailing list which often offers free arthouse movie tickets courtsey of one of my all-time favourite cinemas, The Nova. And sometimes I win.

Hurray!

No idea what the movie’s about but it’s free, I haven’t been in ages, and treats are on the agenda as Aquarius is in the house.

Hmmm, need a blurb

Josh was right: his latest situation is too good to be true. That’s little consolation when his employer is nearly immortal, there’s an in-house witch, and rumours of something nasty living in the lake. If Josh wants his new life to last he might want to run faster. Oh, and away from the woods.

Wolf Hollow – life is no picnic.

say no to semis

January 17, 2009 at 12:34 pm (mischief, writing) ()

Quirk of the month: an aversion to the use of the semi-colon, especially in my dialogue and especially when proofers insist on inserting them. Sorry, guys. I know I use hyphens more often then I should and I certainly use too many elipses (except Giftwrapped which has none) but the ; is … urgh.

And I’m taking way too much pleasure in rejecting the proposed change.

Give Quarter

January 15, 2009 at 6:04 pm (Rogue Mapping) (, , , , , , )

Some people are born with a gift for pushing boundaries. Some people go on to form a company that specialises in exploring the fluid edges redefining the world with every sunrise. These people are Rogue Mapping. From remote mountain peaks where every breath calls angels close, to trendy inner urban zones, they chart their own course.

cruising, entertain ourselves

January 10, 2009 at 1:17 pm (mischief) (, , )

Tunnel vision… oh yes, the world shrunk to the novel and nothing else to the point where I hadn’t been further than the supermarket in about 2 weeks. When I decided the thing was finished I went all the way into the city – wow! 15 minutes on the tram and real people (annoying) but the real wow thing was walking through the Myer basement and thinking wait a minute, I know that music, it’s… it is, yes, Tracy Chapman, the album with the sunflowers on it. OMG. The Myer basement tends to be staffed by the hip skimpy critters so their musical taste is not really mine and I don’t exactly hang around. This time, though…

And I’d had “Fast Car” on the Spite playlist for a while before I figured out it was Thorne’s song for the novel. At the end of the previous she accepted she could stay in The Edge. What she gets out of this one – hopefully – is deciding to stay. But forget that for now.

structurally sound

January 9, 2009 at 2:49 pm (mischief) (, )

Is this character going to make it out of the story alive? For a while last night I wasn’t sure he’d succeed and that would have been bad seeing as he’s my brother’s namesake and this is his birthday present (yes, I’m sort of cheap when it comes to presents but think of all the mental energy and time that goes into the making). So, he will survive with only fairly minor surface damage and a really fine memory. It’s a fun story so far, ridiculous too, a pulpy follow up to Incognition. And it’s short… after working on Spite where the word count was in the five figures it’s very odd to be in the low four figure range.

Giftwrapped, word count: 2 897

doldrums

January 8, 2009 at 11:33 am (Pandora's Edge, mischief, writing) (, , )

There’s a bright light shining through the post-book don’t wanna write doldrums and it’s the 4th Wise Monkey. I’d forgotten all about it until 1st edits on Welcome Home when Rivers made a throwaway remark about the cocktail cafe being also known as the House of the Four Wise Monkeys … most especially the Unless You’re Committing Adultery monkey who keeps the others honest.  Just one of those moments.

Now, if I only I could convince the kittehs to come out of hiding so I can finish that story instead of chasing daddy long legs spiders with the vacuum cleaner.
