water down the sink the wrong way

February 25, 2009 at 5:46 pm (writing) (, , )

Why did I base Thane in Paris? I’ m sure there was a good reason at the time, but now when he has an entire book brewing, the point escapes me. Too late to change his locale; he’s fixed in my memory as there… although, part of the plot is his attempts to leave town. Must raid the non-fiction section of the library (not the local one of course as I’m boycotting due to poor customer service). Must also learn how to pronouce the damn title:

Illume

With an accent on the final e, of course. I caught myself chanting it last night with a variety of inflections and volume. Also quite a lot of wry amusement that I’m stuck with a title that sounds like it should be a circus act. Hmmm… I do like my crime with spangles. Maybe I’ll need a research trip to discover for myself if water does spin down the sink the wrong way in the other hemisphere. Wait – better go check what the right way is.

despite your destination

Every now and then my internal soundstrack will spin out a lyric and I’ll squint into some vague distance trying to remember the rest of the verse and who sings it.

Today, I’m hearing wish I knew what you were looking for … That’s The Church’s “Under the Milky Way” as sung by Ali McGregor on the Lullabies album. And I’m thinking of Zac Kincaid. He worries me. I think there are some bad things coming for him; I know there are some changes he’ll have to work through on account of his twin…  and I know that out of the RM coterie, he’s the most likely to implode. So, yes, he worries me, even while I’m remembering why he’s a delight to meet on the page.

a dicontented brew

February 20, 2009 at 9:48 am (mischief, writing) ()

If I ruled the world the population would be lessened by at least one today, the person who suggested hubble as in “hubble bubble of the fountain” was not a word. Funny. It sounds very Shakespearean to me, but then I am as easily beguiled by words as I am regularly bewildered by the world.

Need more jazz cafe (at the movies). And chocolate.

With a town-wide dislike of the dead woman staked through the heart to a hillside facing the sunrise, isolating a killer is going to be a little tricky. strange days

February 15, 2009 at 4:20 pm (mischief) ()

Something old, something new… somethings missing. While looking for loopholes and opportunities, I checked my favourite market listing and was saddened by the closed, on hiatus, declared dead appended to so many familiar names. The world seems to be growing so much smaller, or maybe a higher price is being put on dreams?

I think I’ve found something I like; stay tuned.

Oh, it’s a G& T kind of sunday afternoon for cool jazz.

my furry valentine

February 14, 2009 at 9:59 pm (mischief) (, , )

My reading highlight for the week was getting my hands on Eileen Wilkes’ Mortal Sins, then lolling on the couch in the (very smoke hazy) sun with a pot of tea close at hand. I was lucky enough to fall for Lily and Rule after the release of the second in the World of the Lupi series but it seemed like a very long year before the next came out… and the fourth… and the fifth… and now I have to wait some more. Worth it, very well worth.  The world is fascinating, the language lush, the minor characters are engaging, and the logic is so appealing. Plus, there’s dragons.

Only 360 odd days to go.

blonde

My favourite blondes will soon be gracing Semaphore’s March 09 issue so get your voting fingers ready for another sortie by the Rogue Mapping twins in Bombshell. Coffee is definitely Zac Kincaid’s drink of choice, especially when everything’s going all to hell around him… maybe even more especially when it’s Holly H kicking off the revelries.

Angels in the architecture

February 8, 2009 at 10:35 am (Angel) (, , , , , , , )

Rue the Day is now available! It’s been an interesting journey, one I never meant to take as Angel was originally a one-off exploration of why superheroines wear socks. Then there were three episodes and much wailing from me that I was supposed to be playing with the other set of characters who had been waiting much longer for their conclusions. Luckily, I often ignore myself.
